Boston is a historic, beautiful city with an incredible seafood culture. But for a celiac, traditional New England food is terrifying.

Clam chowder is thickened with flour. Lobster rolls are served on massive wheat buns. Fried clams are battered in wheat.

If you are visiting Boston, you need a plan. Fortunately, the city has a robust gluten-free scene if you know exactly where to look. Here is your guide to eating safely in Boston.

The Holy Grail: 100% Dedicated GF Seafood

You do not have to skip the iconic New England seafood. You just have to go to the right place.

1. Woodman’s of Essex (Just outside Boston)

The Vibe: The legendary birthplace of the fried clam.

Why it's essential: It is worth the drive out of the city. Woodman's uses corn flour (not wheat) for almost all of their frying, and they maintain dedicated gluten-free fryers. You can safely eat massive plates of fried clams, scallops, and french fries. It is a celiac rite of passage in Massachusetts.

2. Legal Sea Foods (Multiple Locations in Boston)

The Vibe: Upscale, reliable seafood chain.

Why it's essential: Legal Sea Foods is famous nationwide for their celiac protocols. The management is impeccably trained.

* The Chowder: Their world-famous New England Clam Chowder is thickened with potato, NOT wheat. It is naturally gluten-free.

* The Bread: They bring warm GF rolls to the table.

* The Fryers: Most locations maintain dedicated GF fryers for fries and calamari.

100% Dedicated Gluten-Free Spots in Boston

For total peace of mind, plan your itinerary around these dedicated safe havens:

1. Kane's Donuts (Downtown / Saugus)

The Vibe: Iconic donut shop.

Why it's essential: While the shop itself is not 100% dedicated, their GF donuts are made in a completely separate, dedicated GF facility and shipped to the stores individually sealed. They are widely considered some of the best GF donuts in America.

2. Violette Bakers (Cambridge)

The Vibe: A charming, 100% dedicated GF bakery.

Why it's essential: Located across the river in Cambridge, this dedicated bakery offers incredible GF breads, cakes, and pastries. It is the perfect safe stop before touring Harvard.

3. Twist Bakery & Cafe (Burlington / Millis)

The Vibe: A massive, 100% dedicated bakery and cafe.

Why it's essential: A bit of a drive from downtown, but worth it. 100% GF and peanut/tree-nut free. Incredible sandwiches, pancakes, and desserts.

Dining in the North End (Little Italy)

Boston's North End is famous for its Italian food, which usually means massive amounts of airborne flour.

* Benevento's: Highly rated by local celiacs. They offer GF pasta and GF pizza, and while not 100% dedicated, they are very careful about cross-contamination in the kitchen.

* The Cannoli Warning: You will see lines out the door for Mike's Pastry and Modern Pastry. Do not eat there. Even if they offered a GF shell (which is rare), the cross-contamination behind the counter makes it entirely unsafe.

The Lobster Roll Strategy

If you want a lobster roll, you have two safe options:

  • Bring your own bun: Go to a high-quality seafood shack, order a "lobster roll without the bun" (just the meat and butter/mayo on a plate), and put it on a GF Schär bun you brought from the hotel.
  • Go to Legal Sea Foods: They offer a safe lobster roll on a GF bun prepared in a safe area.

  • Summary: Boston requires a bit of research, but between Legal Sea Foods' GF chowder and the dedicated bakeries, you can eat incredibly well. Use the Check Gluten web app to scan any snacks before hitting the Freedom Trail!
